Hard-pressed business people in Mullingar are this week happier than they were about free parking for Christmas in the town, after local Councillors gained an extra free parking day this year – one more than in 2015 – following a debate at Monday’s meeting during which members pushed hard to have all of Christmas week free in Council carparks.
Council officials sought at the meeting to confine the parking to four days for 2016, with Director of Services Martin Murray stressing twice to members that they had worked with the local Mullingar Chamber of Commerce in selecting dates, and the Chamber had agreed to four free days in Council carparks for 2016.
