Kilkenny’s blistering start leaves Westmeath in the shade

Kilkenny came to TEG Cusack Park last Sunday and left with their expected victory in the Walsh Cup, but when Westmeath rake through the ashes of a 12-point defeat, there will be coals of comfort.

Brian Cody’s Kilkenny side, with no fewer than five first team regulars, looked miles ahead of Westmeath early on and their serious levels of work rate often left the Lake County in the shade, while their slick stick work was to be admired. But Westmeath clearly wanted something tangible from this fixture and their ambitious manager Michael Ryan demanded a more fervent approach in the second half and it duly transpired.
