Students in St Joseph’s Secondary School Rochfortbridge addressed phone addiction in young people with their Young Social Innovators (YSI) project. The group surveyed first, second and third years to determine their screen time and identify their most used app. They found students used their phones for an average of four-and-a-half-hours a day and TikTok was the most regularly used app. From here, they determined how they were affected by phone use.
“They couldn’t sleep because of it. Because of the TikTok messages and the Snapchat messages and the Whatsapp messages. That adds to your screen time obviously,” Jack Heaney told Topic.
