St Loman’s Mullingar advanced to the semi-final of the Junior 1 Championship with seven points to spare over Ballycomoyle at a breezy Ballynacargy GAA grounds last Saturday evening, helped by some fine scoring from Daniel McCann and Chris Gilbert, who contributed 1-9 between them on the day. Ballycomoyle, in contrast, never fully hit top gear, despite finding the net three times, and they will look back on the game as perhaps one where utilising returning Tommy Doyle in full-forward better might have brought more.
With the hurling names back in the fray for the north Westmeath side, they were hoping for better, having returned a solitary point in last weekend’s drubbing. For the Lakepoint men, they were banking on the attacking style of play, which has seen them become undeniable favourites to take the title, having been pipped at the death last season by Kilbeggan.
