In the end, it was two very well taken goals by Ciara Blundell, and an inspired performance by sub Johanna Maher, that turned this game in Westmeath’s favour, particularly in the second half, when Westmeath produced more of the football they are capable of.
The first half had been a different story. Cavan, playing some excellent pass and move football, cut through the Westmeath defence with great pace and purpose and led by 0-6 to 0-1 after the first quarter. Indeed it was only an opportunist goal by Ciara Blundell in the 16th minute, that kept Westmeath in the game at the end of the first half, as Cavan deservedly went in leading by 0-8 to 1-2.
In fact their lead could have, and should have, been greater, and it most certainly would have been greater had Westmeath full back Aime Giles not escaped what looked like a certain yellow card and sin bin offence in the 14th minute.
