Garda officials were criticised for their “unacceptable” and “completely wrong” handling over the three year suspension of a Westmeath Garda. The criticism comes after the garda in question was completely cleared of any wrongdoing after giving an unclaimed bicycle from a storeroom to an elderly man during the Covid pandemic at a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, 5 March.
National Bureau of Criminal Investigation detectives searched the garda’s home in 2020 for possible criminal evidence and also visited the pensioner’s home to retrieve the bicycle in question.
