The year was 1994 – The Lion King, Forest Gump and Four Weddings and a Funeral were showing in Irish cinemas and Always by Bon Jovi topped the Irish singles charts this week.
Mary Robinson was President of Ireland, Albert Reynolds was Taoiseach, actor Saoirse Ronan was born and Ireland won the Eurovision Song Contest.
Also this year, Class of ’94 in Loreto College, Mullingar were starting to make their way in the world.
Last Saturday, after 30 years, the girls reunited in Caffrey’s Bar to reminisce on good times and catch up with old friends.
The reunion, arranged by past pupils Lynn Hallahan, Dervila Gilchrist and Liz Forde, all from Mullingar, was sparked by social media and followed on the success of the 21 year reunion back in 2015.
“It came up on my Facebook memories and I couldn’t believe it was 30 years ago, because in our heads we’re still teenagers,” Lynn told Topic.
“Some of us are still in touch and thought we had to do something to mark it. We had the Facebook page from the 21st reunion so we reactivated that and hoped people would be interested. We were so happy to see so many old school friends and teachers from our time in Loreto.”
Caffrey’s buzzed with chat and excitement as friends reconnected while DJ Sarge and Declan Cleary from the Bloomfield days played all the old school tunes.
“It was great to see how everybody was doing,” Lynn reported. “In that time, people have got married, divorced, and some of them are grandparents. Two of our school friends have sadly passed, Majella Scally and Tanya Van Der Loo so we had framed photos of them. They were there with us too.
“We want to say a big thank you to everyone who came out and made it a night to remember.”
