From her home on Austin Friars Street, Elizabeth Buckley sold basic groceries, including cold meats, bread, milk, butter and sweets. This was before the time of refrigeration and things were done differently.
Customers handed over grocery lists to the shop staff who gathered the items behind the counter on their behalf while they traded news and stories. In 1982, Elizabeth expanded into the neighbouring premises where Shaw’s Department Stores now trades, buying a second unit in 1984 and a third in 1987. She moved to the current premises on Austin Friars Street in 1997.
