Cllr Bill Collentine criticised an EU directive which will discontinue grants for the installation of brand new oil and gas boilers during the January meeting of the Mullingar–Kinnegad Municipal District on Monday, 13 January.
He indicated that very few people would want a second-hand boiler which he said the previous owner is throwing out for a reason. The Fianna Fáil politician said it is likely that second-hand boilers are less efficient and will produce more carbon than a brand new boiler. Cllr Collentine said most grant applications will be made by elderly people “that need a very reliable heating system”.
