By Paul O’Donovan. Overall it was a relatively good weekend for Westmeath GAA. The footballers won against Limerick on Sunday, while the hurlers put in a tremendous performance against Tipperary on Saturday losing out by seven points in the end in Semple Stadium, Thurles. The footballers might have struggled, but they got the win and that is all that matters. As manager Dessie Dolan said afterwards, “It doesn’t have to be pretty, you just have to win” and they did by three points in an unimpressive display by 0-14 to 1-8.
That is four wins for the Westmeath footballers out of four games and they now head to Belfast this Sunday for their game against Antrim, with promotion still a real possibility. The hurlers didn’t win, but they came very close. Playing against one of the top hurling sides in the country, in Tipperary, they trailed by just four points, before a goal deep in injury time gave Tipperary a seven-point victory in the end, 3-25 to 2-21.
