All of 180 years ago, in 1835 (less than dozen years before the Great Famine), the death occurred of a popular priest of the Penal era, Fr Timothy Shanley.
A native of Drumraney in south Westmeath and born in 1781, in the Penal era, he was ordained in Maynooth College in 1800, and is laid to rest in the little graveyard known as Carrick, Dalystown.
