Fitness buffs in Westmeath pay some of the cheapest gym membership fees in Ireland according to a new survey.
A survey has found that the average monthly cost for gym membership within the county was €44. Wexford had the same gym fees and only Waterford had cheaper fees than Westmeath in Ireland, with the average monthly membership costing €42.80.
The most expensive average monthly gym membership in the country was found in Leitrim, where the average price was €62, over 40% more expensive than in Westmeath.
Figures, gathered from 177 gyms across 26 counties and four regions in Dublin, found that following Leitrim, the next most expensive counties were Longford (€60.70), Kildare (€59.20), Roscommon (€59) and Monaghan (€58.25).
A potential reason for why Leitrim has the highest on-average gym memberships is because there was a relatively low amount of general access gyms there in comparison to other parts of Ireland.
In terms of provinces, both Leinster (excluding Dublin) and Munster equalled the cheapest average, with a monthly membership of €51. Ulster came as the most expensive province at €58.20 and Connacht followed at €57.50.
Again, it is thought the prices may be dearer in Ulster and Connacht due to both provinces having smaller counties and a comparatively low concentration of general access gyms.
