An Garda Síochána hosted a ceremony in Ballinamore, Co Leitrim on Monday, 16 December, to unveil a Monument of Remembrance honouring Recruit Garda Gary Sheehan and Moate man, Private Patrick Kelly for their sacrifice in the service of the State in December 1983.
It’s over 40 years since Private Kelly, a 36-year-old married father of four from Moate, and 23-year-old Recruit Garda Sheehan from Carrickmacross, County Monaghan were shot dead by a Provisional IRA gang in Drumcornan Wood, Ballinamore. Both men were part of a joint Garda/Irish Defence Forces search party, searching for missing businessman Don Tidey, who was abducted in Dublin by armed members of the IRA posing as members of An Garda Síochána.
