Aoife McCarthy from Mullingar Handball Club said she was “gobsmacked” to win the Westmeath 2024 Volunteers in Sport Award, which was announced on Friday, 7 February.
As well as being one of the country’s top players and coaches, Aoife showed her passion to championing inclusion and youth development in Westmeath, by co-founding the All Stars inclusion programme, which secured a National Lottery Good Causes Award. The programme has made a significant impact, with 70% of neuro-divergent participants transitioning to mainstream training.
