Mullingar Town Band welcomes new members

As summer comes to an end and we gear up for the new school year, Mullingar Town Band is excited to invite new members to join our musical community. Whether you’re young or old, a complete beginner, or someone who already plays an instrument, we’d love to have you be part of our band.

Many people think they need to know how to play an instrument before joining, but that’s not the case! We teach you everything you need to know. Our band learner programs cover everything from reading and playing music to learning the recorder. As you progress, you’ll have the chance to try out various instruments, including brass, woodwind, and percussion. We also offer classes in bucket drumming and Colourguard, which is the flag section of the band.

For those who are more experienced or have a specific interest, we offer next level music classes and stand-alone classes in Colourguard and drumming. You can also join our marching band, the Adult Concert Band, or even perform with our gig ensemble, Blasta Brass. Learning music with Mullingar Town Band is unique because it’s done in a group setting, making it feel like a club. This way, members not only learn music but also make friends and gain leadership skills by taking on roles like section leaders, junior conductors, and instructors.

The band is a lively group, performing at festivals, parades, formal events, and more across the country. We also compete nationally and internationally, with our most recent trip being to the World Music Championships in Germany this past June. This year, we’re also celebrating 50 years since our first trip abroad, where we represented Mullingar in Holland back in 1974.

Voluntary

Mullingar Town Band is a voluntary organisation, and we rely on the support of our members and the community. We fundraise through our performances, renting out our Bandhall, and through events like sponsored cycles and bucket collections. The band is managed by a dedicated committee, our band director, and the support of parents and volunteers.

Our Junior Band Music Programme, led by Kim Magee, is a great place for younger learners aged 6 and up to start their musical journey. These classes run during term time on Monday to Wednesday afternoons, providing a fun and supportive environment for kids to learn and grow.

But it’s not all hard work! We also enjoy fun activities throughout the year, like Halloween and Christmas parties, movie nights, and social outings. These events are a great way to build the lifelong friendships that come with being part of our band.

As we get ready for the new season, we welcome everyone, whether you’re a beginner adult, a returning musician, a young child, or a teen looking to take your musical skills to the next level. Join us for our open evening on September 6 at 6.30pm at the Bandhall (N91 YY96) to find out more about what we offer and see if Mullingar Town Band is right for you.
