New figures released by the National Transport Authority (NTA) have revealed that the number of taxi drivers in Westmeath has dropped by 12% from 332 to 293 since 2019 despite a rising population and growing tourism sector.
However, Westmeath recorded the highest growth of taxi drivers in the midlands and the third highest in the country (behind Kerry and Dublin) between 2023 and 2024, rising by 5.8% compared to Laois and Offaly, which recorded 1.5% growth and a 2.7% decline respectively.
