Palestinian filmmaker brings ‘Phoenix of Gaza’ film screening to Mullingar

By Thomas Lawrence

Palestinian journalist and filmmaker Yousef Alhelou will be hosted by Mullingar 4 All and Longford-Westmeath IPSC this Sunday, 22 June, at the Greville Arms Hotel for a film screening of his documentary Phoenix of Gaza: A City Lost To Genocide.

The screening will begin at 7.30pm and will provide the viewer with “unseen footage of Gaza’s beauty and the resilience of its residents” in the weeks prior to the October 7 attacks which prompted Israel to strike back, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths.

Following the 45 minute screening, those in attendance will be treated to a Q&A session with Alhelou to speak about the docu-film which “now serves as an archive of its past.”

Mullingar 4 All’s Christine O’Mahony told Topic that their group have hosted events aimed at raising awareness in the past and have noticed an increased demand for educational opportunities regarding the war in Gaza as it has progressively worsened.

“We’ve done a lot of talks like this before with Palestinian journalists or workers, you know, and they’ve got a great reception, people like to learn more so I think this will be a great film and people are really interested,” she said.

You can buy a ticket for €10 in advance on Eventbrite or pay at the door, with all of the money raised going to Yousef, his family, and the continued tour of his documentary.
