Public health alert issued concerning Westmeath rail passengers

The Department of Public Health, HSE West and HSE North West have issued a public health alert after the discovery of a highly suspect measles case which is currently under investigation.

Any travellers on the train – specifically in carriage D – leaving Connolly Station at 5.05pm on Friday, 28 March headed toward Sligo are being advised to be cautious of the onset of measles symptoms.

If you were on that train for longer than 15 minutes, symptoms may present within 21 days of exposure which, in this case, is 18 April.

Signs and symptoms may resemble a cold – a runny nose, sneezing, coughing – but can also include a high temperature, a rash typically appearing on the head and neck first, and sore red eyes.

The highly infectious disease can pose serious health risks to those who lack immunity from it including children aged a year or less, pregnant women and the immunosuppressed.

While those born in Ireland before 1978 or who’ve had the disease are likely immune, those who are unvaccinated are being asked to request their two MMR doses from a GP.
