Having scored a late point in injury time to draw level, The Downs then went on to dominate extra time and overcome Athlone by seven points in this closely contested Senior Football Championship Quarter-Final played in TEG Cusack Park on Saturday evening last.
A goal by Niall Mitchell from close range, after good work by Matthew Cunningham, proved to be the crucial score in extra time as the 2022 Westmeath champions booked a place in the last four and a semi-final clash against Paschal Kelleghan’s Coralstown-Kinnegad side.
