Unoccupied railway row house set alight

The Railway Row housing scheme of houses was built in the 1800s

The only remaining house in the old Railway Row scheme, on Iarnród Eireann property, near Mullingar Station, opening on to Clonmore Road carpark behind Mullingar Fire Station, was seen to have been hit by fire on Wednesday evening last between 5.30 and 6pm, with Mullingar Fire Brigade units scrambling to tackle the blaze inside the old building.

Until about five years ago, the house was still occupied, but the occupant had since then been rehoused elsewhere in the town. It is understood that youths are believed to have started the fire.
It is known that the Railway Row buildings have been used on previous occasions by gatherings of young people for drinking outings.
