Westmeath brothers celebrate half a century since kidney donation

Various health organisations internationally have estimated that kidney transplants from living donors can last between 15 and 25 years, but Athlone’s Sean Fitzpatrick will tell you that his has given him another 50 years of life.

In 1975, Sean was the first patient in Ireland to receive a kidney transplant without going on dialysis first after his brother Seamus selflessly offered one of his own for the operation.
