Young mother died after misdiagnosis

The High Court in Dublin heard last week that after a misdiagnosis at Mullingar Regional Hospital in November, 2014, a 26-years-old mother of two, Natasha Perie, who was 15 weeks pregnant, suffered a ruptured cerebral cyst and was declared clinically brain dead at a Dublin hospital on 3 December that year.

However, due to an erroneous view at the time, that taking her off life support could breach the Eighth Amendment, she remained on life support until a High Court ruling on 26 December, 2014 stated the life support could be ended as the only prospect for the unborn child was distress and death. the three- judge court ruling also stated that maintaining life support would deprive Natasha Perie of dignity in death and subject her family to “unimaginable distress in a futile exercise.”
