New data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) reveals a 71% increase of residential gas costs for those living in Westmeath in just two years.
The CSO data, released on Friday, 20 September, shows the average cost of residential gas in Westmeath to be €1,177 in 2023, compared to €934 in 2022, and just €689 in 2021. The county price increase of 71% is slightly higher than the national increase of residential gas cost of 69%.
Whilst Westmeath has a high cost increase for residential gas, costs are still less than the national average of €1,249.
Westmeath has the fifteenth most expensive residential gas out of all the counties in Ireland. Cavan is the most expensive county for residential gas, totalling €1,423 whereas Wexford has the lowest costs of any county in Ireland, with the considerably cheaper €806 to be paid.
FIFTH MOST EXPENSIVE ELECTRICITY
With residential electricity costs, Westmeath has the joint fifth most expensive costs in the country, with residents paying on average €944. Only Laois, Carlow, Wicklow, Meath and Kildare at €1,020 pay more for electricity than Westmeath’s inhabitants. Donegal has the cheapest residential electricity costs at €726.
Although residential electricity prices have followed the trend nationally of reducing by around 30% since 2021, the combined costs of electricity and gas in Westmeath has gone up by over €80 per year.
