Local IKA branch prepare to cycle into the west

The Westmeath Branch of the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) are preparing for a real adventure next Saturday, when they take on the greenway cycle from Westport to Achill in Mayo.
Over 30 participants will depart Mullingar early on Saturday morning and they will joined by another group from Dublin for the cycle in Westport. In total, 59 will participate. Eddie Flood, Chairman of the Westmeath IKA Branch, said they have opted for this activity instead of the Croagh Patrick climb, which they have completed for the past four years.
“This is something different and everyone is really looking forward to it,” he told Topic this week.
“It should be a fun day out and everyone can participate, regardless of cycling ability. We hope to make it a regular event going forward and we’re hoping everyone enjoys the day, but the important thing is that we are continuing to raise awareness of organ donation,” he added.
Saturday’s event will also raise funds for the Renal Support Centre at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, a wonderful amenity for patients and families. In an era where charities are coming under scrutiny, the chairman is keen to point out that the IKA is not a section 38 charity and relies totally on donations from the public.
Participants in Saturday’s cycle have been gathering sponsorship for the event and Eddie is grateful to all those who have lent their support.
IDYLLIC ROUTE
Taking in an idyllic route through a beautiful part of Mayo, the flat surface along the old railway line is great for cyclists of every ability.
The cycle route, rated one of the top four things to do in Ireland, runs along the old Westport to Achill railway line which closed in 1937 and the 42km is almost entirely traffic free.
Travelling the greenway, cyclists will be surrounded by idyllic countryside. They will be able to enjoy view of the spectacular Nephin Beg mountain range and look across Clew Bay to Croagh Patrick. Mulranny’s Blue Flag beach is also on the route.
A bus is being provided from Mullingar to Westport for all participants and bike hire will be subsidised.
The bus will depart Kinnegad on Saturday morning at 7.30am, travelling to Killucan for 7.40am and on to the Mullingar Park Hotel for approximately 7.50am. Then it’s on to Westport for what should be a great day.
Anyone wishing to participate at this late stage can contact chairman, Eddie Flood (087 9665750) or secretary, Cathy Smith (086 8049487).
