Multimillion regeneration of Mullingar to commence in the spring

A €3 million investment into urban renewal for Mullingar will be rolled out next year, with an emphasis on enhancing the town’s civic spaces.
At this month’s meeting of Mullingar Municipal District, which took place on Monday, elected members were given a presentation outlining the proposed key elements of the regeneration project by RPS Consultants.
There are several strands to the regeneration project, including alterations to the traffic flow, parking, access and pedestrian facilities in the town.
ONE WAY FOR MOUNT STREET
A one way system for Mount Street is contained in the plan, with greater pedestrian space provided for the Market Square. There will be no left turn for cars from Pearse Street onto Mount Street.
The mini roundabout at the Pearse Street/Castle Street junction is to be replaced with traffic lights, with smart signalisation to be introduced.
The plan proposes changing Martin’s Lane to a cul de sac and changing the direction of the entry to Dominick Place.
There was widespread welcome in the chamber for the project and the much needed investment for Mullingar. The project is expected to enhance the public areas of the town, providing attractive civic spaces at Market Square and Dominick Square.
Irish limestone will be used in the paving, not Chinese granite for better long term maintenance.
Also, the meeting was reassured that the statue of the legendary Joe Dolan, an ever popular attraction for fans from around the world will be staying put on the newly refurbished Market Square!
PUBLIC CONSULTATION
The project is expected to deliver benefits to business, recreation and tourism for Mullingar, increasing investment opportunities and giving a boost to the commercial life of the town.
It also aims to improve attractive and accessible public spaces for the elderly and those with disability.
Martin Murray, Director of Services with Westmeath County Council told the meeting that two open days will be scheduled as part of the public consultation phase.
Further discussion on the issue will follow in the autumn when the draft plan will come before elected members for approval with work on the project expected to commence in the spring of 2018.
