LOCAL musicians and performers raised the roof of the Greville Arms Hotel on a night to remember in Mullingar’s music history on Tuesday of last week, 24 June, when they paid a tribute to the late Vinny Baker.
A host of musicians from across the county and further afield who had worked with the late Vinny, who passed away unexpectedly in July last year, honoured his memory on what would have been his 63rd birthday. “This date was meant to be,” said Gary Baker, a son of the late musician, addressing the huge crowd that gathered for the jam packed show. Gary explained that Danny Slevin and Joe Meehan came up with the idea for the tribute show, and decided upon 24 June as a suitable date for the show unaware of its significance. It was only when the pair approached Vinny’s family about the idea that they were told that the day in fact would be extra special, as it was his birthday! Gary then continued by wishing his late father a very happy birthday and read out a heartfelt message from his brother Bobby, who could not attend the show.
