Local representatives and Westmeath County Council discussed how they can prepare for future storms after the impact of Storm Éowyn during the January meeting of the Council on Monday, 27 January.
Cllr Ken Glynn said there will be more storms in the future and added that it was important to put measures in place to mitigate the damage done. He raised the issue of fallen trees which pose numerous hazards and said many trees were loosened by the wind but weren’t uprooted. The Fianna Fáil politician indicated that these pose a threat moving forward.
Cllr Denis Leonard pointed out that he tabled a motion on tree cutting during the January meeting of the Mullingar–Kinnegad Municipal District on Monday, 13 January. He said the Council needs to undertake a survey of every tree in the county and added that a coordination group should be formed to monitor roadside trees.
