Armed raid on local home

Three local people were tied up with one of them being viciously assaulted during a daylight burglary on Tuesday morning of this week, 2 September.
The drama began at 10am on Tuesday morning, when three armed raiders, wearing balaclavas, broke into a house at Martinstown, Whitehall, approximately three miles outside Castlepollard.
The occupant of the house, a well-known businessman and his wife, along with a man who was visiting the couple, were in the house at the time.
One of the raiders was armed with a firearm – a handgun – and this raider then assaulted the owner of the house, while demanding that the owner tell the raiders where they kept their money.
The raiders then proceeded to steal what has been described as an undisclosed sum of money, a quantity of jewellery and a legally held firearm.
Approximately an hour after they entered the house, the three raiders left, after they had tied up the three people inside the house.
A short time after the raiders left, the man who was visiting the house managed to set himself free. He then untied the owner of the house and his wife, before going outside to raise the alarm.
The injured party was not seriously injured, and did not require hospital treatment, although he was badly shaken, as were his wife and the visitor, who were also tied up.
Gardaí from Castlepollard and from Mullingar attended the scene within minutes, and a Garda manhunt began immediately in an effort to track down the raiders.
Those involved were reported to have had Dublin accents, and two of them were described as being well-built.
APPEAL FOR HELP
Gardaí have appealed for anyone in the Crookedwood, Whitehall and Castlepollard areas, who may have seen anything suspicious early on Tuesday morning of this week, 2 September, to come forward and help them with their investigation. In particular, Gardaí are asking anyone who may have seen a grey car acting suspiciously in these areas to come forward and assist them.
Residents in the north Westmeath area have expressed serious concerns this week, following this latest serious robbery, and are worried about the vulnerability of residents in country areas at the present time, as fast-moving gangs hit rural targets.
