JAMES Greene, a past pupil of Mullingar Community College’s class of 2013/14, was recently awarded the 3rd place prize in the Engineering All-Ireland schools final. James sailed through the midland schools region for Westmeath and Offaly before going on to receive a prize at the All-Ireland finals held at the Glenroyal Hotel in Maynooth. As part of the competition, James had to design and make a Batman tumbler mobile. This was by no means a simple task as the ‘Batman Tumbler’ had to fulfil many functions such as steer, move and include a car door capable of opening and closing automatically. James also had to create a design portfolio based on the project, including design ideas, sketches and working drawings. This student always had a talent for engineering and this was very evident from a young age as he received an ‘A’ grade for his higher level Junior Certificate metalwork project. Needless to say, James continued these high standards by obtaining an ‘A1’ grade in 2014 in Higher Level Engineering. Mr. Doyle, the engineering teacher at Mullingar Community College was particularly delighted for James and for Mullingar Community College as this is the second year in a row that MCC has had two pupils competing in the All-Ireland Engineering schools final. James did excellently overall in the Leaving Certificate as he achieved 550 points and is now studying Undenominated Engineering at NUIG Galway. We wish James all the very best with his further studies in engineering.
