TWO of Westmeath’s junior scientists have reached the national finals of an exciting science competition, which is aimed at Primary Schools and attracts thousand of entries each year.
From Tubberclare national School, Rory Kane and Eoghan Duffy have earned a spot at the national finals of the Intel Mini Science Exhibition.
This is a programme that encourages scientific discovery among Primary School students.
This week, there was good new for the two Westmeath pupils whose triumph in regional finals proved that they are not experimenting with success!
The winning entry was the brainchild of two 6th class pupils of Tubberclare National School, Rory Kane and Eoghan Duffy, who warmed up the competition with their innovative project ‘Heat from Below’.
Westmeath’s budding scientists were among thousands of young students from across Ireland who took part in the 2015 Intel Mini Scientist competition
The competition, which kicked off in September, gives young students the chance to explore science through project based learning and exhibitions.
Rory and Eoghan sailed through the first phase of the programme, which involved participating at an exhibition in their own school which was visited by Intel employees tasked with adjudicating the first round.
Rory and Eoghan’s winning project was then selected to proceed to the regional finals, held last week at the Intel campus in Leixlip, Co. Kildare.
The 2015 initiative was the biggest year yet for the Mini Scientist competition with more than 5,500 students from 110 schools across Ireland taking part and the Regional Finals in Leixlip brought together almost 250 students from 75 different schools to take part and exhibit their work.
Among them were the dynamic Tubberclare duo, who exhibited their project for a panel of judges, which was made up from Intel employees.
Impressing the panel with their innovative and imaginative project, put together through months of hard work, Eoghan and Rory secured their prestigious win.
The boys will now take their project forward to participate in the national mini scientist final, which takes place in the Science Gallery in Dublin on 22 January 2016.
The national final will bring together 22 different projects from around the country, all of which are being selected at regional final events.
