€77,000 to grit remaining roads next winter

By Claire Corrigan
It will cost €77,000 to salt remaining regional road network next winter, Damien Grennan, Senior Engineer, Westmeath County Council Transportation Department revealed when he spoke at the latest Planning and Transportation SPC last week.

However Mr. Grennan said that introduction of a new system of gritting could see costs associated with the service drop significantly. “We have been considering ordering pre-wet or brine for treating our routes. The use of brine ensures that all salt is pre-wet and the volume needed is significantly less than dry salt – 30 percent less.”
