Jack Cooney is hoping his players make the most of the big occasion

By Paul O’Donovan

The Westmeath senior footballers are on a journey. An unexpected journey. They are heading into what manager Jack Cooney calls ‘bonus territory’, that is if they can beat rivals Offaly in the Tailteann Cup semi final this Sunday in Croke Park.

Cooney’s side reached the semi final by virtue of a hard earned five point victory over Carlow in the quarter final, a game Cooney was pleased to get through.

“We were delighted to beat Carlow and get through to the semi final. We were particularly happy as we felt it was an increase and an improvement in our performance. It is important, in order to gain momentum, that you improve game on game.

“What is particularly pleasing for both teams, ourselves and Offaly, is that we have had a two week break leading up to this semi final. So we have had a little chance to draw breath and make a plan for the game against Offaly,” said Cooney.
