It was Leinster senior singles 40 by 20 titles on the double for the McCarthy family when both Aoife and Robert junior claimed wins last Sunday in Tinryland, Carlow.
In the senior ladies competition Aoife recorded a resounding 21-6, 21-10 win over Ciara Mahon from Kilkenny and this booked her a place in the final against the highly rated Patricia Byrne from Wicklow.
In the final Aoife showed her immense skill with precision serves, expert kill shots and around the court play to defeat Byrne 21-18, 21-18.
This win was fully deserved by Aoife who has put in tremendous training over the past number of months and has always given tremendous work into the development of handball in Mullingar and Westmeath.
In the men’s singles Robert junior showed all his talents to record yet another Leinster title.
In the quarter-final Robert junior recorded an emphatic 21-9, 21-5 win over KIldare’s Paul Byrne and he continued that fine form into the semi-final where he defeated Peter Function from Kilkenny 21-4, 21-4.
In the final Robert met Brian Carroll of Meath. This was a game in which Carroll was expected to put it up to Robert but Robert put his silken skills to full use to see off the challenge of Carroll by 21-5, 21-10.
Now it is full focus on the national title for Robert and certainly if he continues his good form, he will be a hard nut to crack for any of the remaining players in the hunt for the title.
