A Mullingar man is the latest lucky lotto winner from Westmeath, completing a trio of Lake County contestants to appear on the National Lottery gameshow ‘Winning Streak’ in just under a month.
Martin Flynn, from Mullingar, was a guest on last Saturday’s show, playing for his son, Matthew.
Martin is the third contestant from Westmeath to win a spot on the televised show in the span of just a few weeks. It may be that the benevolent weather this summer has resulted in an unusual crop of four- leaved shamrocks for Westmeath, or perhaps the Lake County is the luckiest place in Ireland, but one things seems clear, Lady Luck is smiling on Westmeath this autumn.
Martin netted a prize of €43,000, a happy result that came about after what was truly a family effort, which began when the lucky ticket was purchased at Buckley’s Supermarket, Millmount, Mullingar.
It was Martin who happened upon some Lotto tickets in his van and his wife Frances sent them on their way, writing the names of family members on the tickets.
It was the ticket bearing the name of the couple’s son, Matthew that was drawn out, a big surprise for the Flynn family.
Matthew is 16 and is Martin and Frances’ only son. Matthew has one sister, 13 years old Lauren and both are students in Mullingar.
Matthew completed his Junior Cert this year, earning an impressive 7As and 4Bs. He is a keen carpenter and enjoys wood turning in his spare time as well as practicing the art of Tai Chi. Matthew was represented by his father on the National Lottery’s flagship show, ‘Winning Streak’ on Saturday night last. He and his mum Frances and sister, Lauren accompanied Martin to the RTÉ studios in Montrose for the day.
Martin, who is a native of County Leitrim, works as a plumber and was delighted to take part in the show.
Martin won a prize of €43,000 and Matthew, who he described as his lucky charm, is looking forward to upgrading his games console out of the winnings and to acquiring a new lathe for his wood working.
Martin is the latest Westmeath contestant on the show, with two other winners coming from the Lake County in recent weeks.
