Westmeath GAA seems likely to launch an investigation into controversial scenes at the end of the Bunbrosna versus Ballymore Intermediate Football Championship clash at Moynihan Park, Ballynacargy, last Saturday.
Bunbrosna earned a draw with Ballymore, thereby ensuring that they remain in the intermediate grade for 2017. The result was of no consolation to Ballymore, who now face a relegation playoff against Ballynacargy, but the major talking point following Saturday’s game was the melee that took place after the final whistle.
Sources confirmed that a number of players and substitutes were involved in the incident and that it was particularly nasty, with blows and kicks landed. At least one player required hospital treatment following the game, which was described as ugly with an over emphasis on physicality. It is understood that the post match incident is considered very serious and that there will be sanctions imposed by Westmeath GAA.
Westmeath County Board Chairman, Sean Sheridan could not comment specifically on the incident when contacted by Topic on Monday.
“We are awaiting the referee’s report and it will be dealt with by the Competitions Control Committee (CCC),” he said.
The chairman praised the Ballynacargy GAA Club for their hosting of Saturday’s double header, which included the meeting of Shandonagh and Milltown. He noted that at lease 30 stewards were on duty and everything was very well organised.
Meanwhile, Rosemount and Tang have qualified for the semi-finals of the Intermediate Football Championship, while Shandonagh will meet Milltownpass in one quarter final and the other sees Tubberclair await the winners of a playoff match involving St Mary’s Rochfortbridge and Milltown.
