Dublin burglary gangs have been targeting Mullingar over the last year which has been a serious problem for local gardaí and has led to a spike of such offences in the area.
Speaking at a Joint Policing Committee meeting on 16 January, Detective Inspector Tom Quinn, of Mullingar Garda Station, said these Dublin criminals were “targeting us through the roads network” due to our proximity to the capital.
This was noted as a factor behind the 38% increase of burglaries throughout the Mullingar Policing District.
“Society returning to normal” in a post-Covid world was also referenced as a factor behind the crime surge, which saw 110 burglaries take place during the year, up 30 from the year previous.
A high volume of the burglaries attributed to Dublin gangs took place in early 2022, DI Quinn said.
