Mullingar Rugby Club is delighted to announce that Westmeath County Council has granted planning permission to proceed with phase 1 of a massive three-year €900,000 capital project to revolutionise the club’s facilities and put it firmly on the road of becoming the midland’s premier rugby club.
Work will start shortly at Shay Murtagh Park on a full size synthetic, all-weather pitch which is expected to be completed mid May 2015, followed immediately by works on a training area and fitness trail. This development will allow the club to deliver on its mission to promote the playing, participation and ethos of rugby in the local community and to meet the demands of a dramatic growth in the playing numbers of our minis, youths, ladies, special needs, and tag rugby sections.
PST Sport, an Irish company from Tralee, won the contract against some very stiff competition. Speaking on behalf of PST Sport, Colin Teahon explained what the new pitches will be like.
“Our monofilament 3G synthetic grass is specifically designed to suit the modern game of rugby. This means it is highly resilient, has excellent shock absorption qualities and gives optimal playing characteristics all year around. Utilising straight and curly yarn fibres, this innovative surface really is the closest thing to nature. Coupled with a high density shock pad, this world class IRB certified system means Mullingar RFC will be at the cutting edge of artificial grass technology in rugby,” he said.
The club would like to express grateful thanks to all of the sponsors and contributors who made this phase of our capital project possible and in particular the following merit special mention:
The Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport, Shay Murtagh Ltd (purchaser of the naming rights for the grounds), The Newbrook Group (main club sponsor), Green Farm Foods (club sponsor) Globoserv Ltd, sponsors of our advertising hoardings, and contributors to our Members Pathway.
Phase 2 of our capital project is expected to cost in the region of €300k and will involve re-development of the clubhouse and the improvement of player and visitor facilities.
Mullingar Rugby Club is fast becoming the place to meet and make friends, to play or just watch sport in a safe and disciplined environment.
All are welcome!
