Garda Commissioner unveils memorial to late Garda Alan Moran

The family, friends and colleagues of the late Mullingar-native Garda Alan Moran gathered at Edenderry Garda Station last Thursday, 31 March as Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan unveiled a memorial to the Garda, following his untimely death in March, 2015.
The death of Alan Moran sent shock waves throughout Mullingar where he lived and Edenderry where he was stationed as a member of An Garda Síochána from 2007.
During the years he was stationed in Edenderry, Alan had built up a wonderful relationship with members of the local community and in particular the children in the local schools in Edenderry which he visited on an ongoing basis.
Garda Moran had played senior football with Tubber for a number of years and was also involved with Mullingar Shamrocks where he was a loyal and dedicated club member.
He played with a number of teams with Mullingar Shamrocks as well as as contributed greatly on the playing field over 25 years, and was always extremely supportive when it came to club events and initiatives. Prior to his death Alan participated very actively in the club fundraising cycles.
Inspector Kieran Keyes extended a warm welcome to Commissioner O’Sullivan and to the members of the force that had travelled from Tullamore and Mullingar to join with Alan’s colleagues in Edenderry for what was a very special occasion.
He had a special word of welcome for the members of Alan’s family and extended family who were present for the occasion.
Prior to unveiling the memorial in memory of the late Garda Alan Moran, Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan said, “I am deeply honoured and privileged to be here today on what is a sad, but special day for Alan’s wife Cathriona, his daughters, Brona and Eabha, his family and extended family as we remember Alan’s life.”
“It is important to remember the special times. Alan was a special person and will be remembered for all the good things he did for his family and also for the community of Edenderry.
“He was stationed here in Edenderry from 2007 until his sudden death last year and he left a lasting impression on not only his colleagues here in the station but also the people of the town, in particular the young people.”
“Alan will be remembered very fondly by the people of the town, his family and his many friends.”
“We should never forget those who have gone before us and who have worked hard to give us such a wonderful life. It is important that when people call here to the station to carry out their business, that when they turn to leave they will see this memorial for Alan,” stated Commissioner O’Sullivan.
“He was a huge man with a big heart and was an exceptional Garda,” stated Superintendent John Maloney.
Speaking on behalf of the Moran family, Alan’s father, Tom thanked everyone who was involved in organising what was a very special and memorable day for Cathriona, Brona and Eabha and all the Moran family.
“Alan was a very proud member of An garda Síochána and he loved his job just as he loved his family.
“He was a very special person and will be lovingly remembered by all of us,” said Mr. Moran.
