MRHM appointment cancellation almost double in ‘concerning spike’

By Diarmuid Sherry.  Appointment cancellations at Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar nearly doubled in the first three quarters of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. There were 4,291 appointment cancellations in the stated time period, compared to 2,169 appointment cancellations the year before. That represents a percentage increase of 98%.

Nearly 200,000 appointment cancellations occurred nationally, a 48% increase which whilst very high, is still a considerably smaller figure than seen in Mullingar hospital. In a statement, the Dublin Midland Hospital Group said: “A hospital-initiated cancellation of an outpatient or inpatient/day case procedure is defined as the rescheduling of a patient To Come In (TCI) date by the hospital due to circumstances beyond its control.
