The statement that it would cost approximately €1m to restore the much-debated roundabout at McDonald’s in Mullingar, at the junction of Castle Street and Pearse Street, in an effort to improve the town’s ongoing traffic congestion, caused some shock on Saturday morning last.
While there’s been ongoing calls to have the current traffic lights arrangement changed, the first time a costing has been mentioned was on Saturday, when the figure was quoted by the Mullingar Chamber President, John Geoghegan.
He was contributing on Saturday to a lively and at times heated discussion on local radio, on the issue of the constant daily traffic holdups in the town, since the new sets of traffic lights were installed as part of the town centre enhancement scheme.
