Fire Brigade units from Castlepollard and Oldcastle were summoned to a serious outbreak of fire in the centre of Collinstown village on Saturday afternoon last, 14 March, and while the popular business premises was badly damaged in the blaze, the Brigade personnel succeeded in averting what could have been a much more serious incident.
The Roma Takeaway in Collinstown is in the property adjoining Collinstown Filling Station, and when the fire was discovered the local Fire services were summoned and the brigades from Castlepollard and Collinstown rushed to the scene.
“As a result, what could have been a disastrous situation was avoided, as the Fire Brigade members succeeded in getting the fire under control and keeping the outbreak away from the nearby petrol and diesel pumps,” one local resident who was at the scene, told Topic.
It was feared at first that nearby premises might have faced evacuation, but the promptness with which the Fire Brigade personnel arrived, and their effective work confined the damage and the hazards to the takeaway premises, which was seriously damaged.
The Roma Takeaway in Collinstown was very popular, and local people expressed great regret over what had happened, and expressed the hope that the business could recover and re-open.
It is speculated that an electrical fault may have caused the accidental fire, but this could not be confirmed at time of going to press.
