Answering emergency calls has become more hazardous for Gardai. In Mullingar two Gardaí who answered a call about a theft from an off-licence shop at Market Point, Mullingar were attacked and one of them, a female Garda was dragged by the hair to the ground in an assault when they arrived on the scene last Sunday night, 3 September.
The incident occurred at about 9.40pm on Sunday night of this week, when the Gardaí received a report of an alleged theft from an off licence in the Market Point area of Mullingar.
When two Gardaí arrived at the scene, they saw two juvenile girls acting suspiciously. When Gardaí approached the young girls and began to question them, one of the two attacked a female officer and dragged the Garda to the ground by her hair, while the second Garda was threatened by the other young girl with a broken bottle.
Garda reinforcements were called, we understand, and the two teenage girls were arrested at the scene.
Neither of the Gardaí involved were injured, Topic was informed, but one of them received a tetanus injection at Mullingar hospital as a precaution.
The two young girls who were arrested were later released without charge, but a file is being prepared and will be sent to the DPP.
Three arrested after Garda car rammed
In a separate incident, Gardaí were fortunate to escape injury when their patrol car was rammed by a car which failed to stop when Gardaí requested the driver to do so.
The incident occurred on Thursday, 31 August when Gardaí, who had been searching for a group of burglars in the area, came across a Silver Ford Mondeo car acting suspiciously on the Kinnegad to Enfield road. The Gardaí requested the car to stop but it failed to do so. Instead, it rammed into the Garda car. However another Garda car happened to be close by at the time of the incident and it managed to block the Ford Mondeo car in between the two Garda cars. Gardaí jumped in immediately and arrested the three men that were inside the car.
Gardaí then searched the car and found a quantity of what is believed to be cannabis, cocaine, and drug paraphenalia. The men were arrested and charged with intent of sale and supply of drugs, while a third man was arrested on a charge of endangering a Garda while driving a vehicle.
