‘An absolute disgrace’ – Cllr Hill blasts disrespect shown to national anthem

By Diarmuid Sherry
A Westmeath County councillor has slammed those who don’t respect the Irish national anthem as “an absolute disgrace” who need “a bit of a lesson.” Fianna Faíl councillor, Paddy Hill, was speaking during a motion debate on erecting the national flag and pole at Fore carpark. Cllr Hill said: “I do think we need to have much more respect for the national flag. I am also very disappointed that when our national anthem is being played, a number of people, including the players, don’t stand to attention as they should. I also notice a number of people wearing their caps.

“I think it is an absolute disgrace. It would not happen in any other country in the world. It is time that people copped on and we give them a bit of a lesson as they can not stand quiet to respect our national anthem for maybe two or three minutes.”
