In what was one of their biggest-attended events in recent years, Westmeath Archaeological and Historical Society hosted Supreme Court Judge Mr Justice Peter Charleton in a packed ballroom at the Greville Arms Hotel last Wednesday evening, 25 January.
Mr Charleton, who has served as a Judge of the Supreme Court since 2014, delivered a lecture on the life, death and consequences of Reinhard Heydrich, a high-ranking German SS and police official during the Nazi era, who was a principal architect of the Holocaust.
In his hour-long informative lecture titled ‘The Call of Heroism and the Destruction of a Tyrant’, Mr Charlton spoke of the bravery of soldiers Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčik who played their part in Operation Anthropoid, which led to the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich in Prague in 1942.
