Mullingar’s night life awarded purple flag

Mullingar joined four other towns in Ireland in receiving a Purple Flag award last week, bringing to ten the number of towns in Ireland with the flag, which is considered to be the Gold Standard for town and city centres at night.
The town joined Galway, Sligo, Waterford and Westport in picking up the status at an award ceremony in Dublin last Tuesday.
At its latest meeting in the Annebrook House Hotel on Monday of this week, the chairman of Mullingar’s Town Team, Jim Bourke, spoke of the the great honour in receiving the award.
“It was a great honour for me to except this award last week on behalf of the Mullingar Town Team, who worked so hard to get it. It’s a great honour for the committee, who are less than a year in operation and it’s due to hard work that was put into it.
Deputy Robert Troy, who established the Town Team, complimented the committee and commented the on work which will now need to be undertaken to improve the image of the town even further.
“I want to compliment the Town Team for all of the trojan work which has been put in over the last number of months in ensuring that Mullingar would be successful in securing the Purple Flag,” said Deputy Troy. “Now we need to build on that success while be have the momentum and positively and ensure that more great things come to the town.”
Deputy Troy spoke of the close contact which is being made with Westmeath County Council in ensuring support is given to groups like the Town Team.
“Regular contact is being made with Westmeath County Council to ensure formal support can be given to the many community groups in Mullingar. It’s important from here on out that we work on this an ensure that it beings many more benefits to the town.” he concluded.
Hotelier, Berty Dunne from the Annebrook House Hotel, spoke of his meeting with the Purple Flag accessors, and how they were impressed with the town.
“Having met the accessor and spoken them, it was obvious that they were very impressed with the town; they said that it was one of the best towns they visited.”
Town Team executive member, Brigid Manley, spoke of the many many positive comments made by the accessors while reviewing the town, as well as the plans to add further improvements to the town’s image.
“One of the comments made was that Mullingar town was a town which worked so well together. It took the work of the town to get the purple flag, and it will be the work of the town which will bring further improvements.
Certain areas will need to be improved such as chewing gum on the streets as and street lighting. We’ve started a good initiative and we need to beef it up now.”
Committee member, Mark Brindley, complimented the efforts of Mullingar in getting the flag, which is just one of fifty areas internationally with the award.
While the committee may have done great work, it came down to the town to get the flag. It was a well orchestrated event and it shows what we can do as a town. Going forward, we need to be very organised, and work on the success of this.”­
FLAG RAISING
Following on from Monday’s meeting, it was announced that an official flag raising ceremony is to take place this coming Friday on the Market Square at approximately 5pm. Anyone wishing to purchase a flag for their premises can do so for €80. Further information is available from any Mullingar Town Team member.
