By Michelle Crawley

The Downs NS choir are eagerly counting down the days to their special performance this forthcoming Friday, 14 November, with world-renowned musicians, t he Celtic Tenors, at St. Paul’s Church in Mullingar.
Muriel Flynn, chair of The Downs NS Parents’ Council, explained to Topic this week that the unique performance, which will see the children of the school’s choir collaborate with the Celtic Tenors on a number of songs, is one that the entire school community is looking forward to and revealed that the students have been busy rehearsing over the past number of weeks for this special collaboration with world-class artists, James Nelson, Matthew Gilsenan, and Daryl Simpson, who have sold millions of albums all over the world. “The children are so excited to have this opportunity and they are all looking forward to this great event,” Muriel revealed.
FUNDRAISER
The upcoming concert follows on from the school’s highly successful Valentine’s 5K fundraiser held in February to raise funds to cover the cost of the site for the school’s new building. The school has been given approval by the Department of Education and Skills for funding to build a state-of-the-art energy conservation school which incorporates the integral historic structure of the old school building with new contemporary classroom design and is currently raising funds to cover the cost of the site adjacent to the current school building and prefabs. Plans for the new school, which will include the addition of 5 new mainstream classrooms and two resource rooms, are almost ready to be submitted to the county planner for planning permission.
