Mullingar blogger takes first prize at national awards ceremony

One local woman won herself an award for her online publication at the prestigious Blog Awards Ireland event last Thursday evening, 22 October.
Now based in Los Angeles, California, Mullingar-native Catriona Weafer (Nally) scooped first prize in the Irish Language category for her blog “An Chroí Áit” at the annual awards ceremony at the Tivoli Theatre, Dublin.
Bloggers from all over the country descended on the venue to celebrate the much anticipated annual awards hosted by Ashville Media Group.
Ms. Weafer warded off stiff competition to collect the prize with over 500 attendees in 36 categories hoping to bring home the coveted first, second or third place.
Awards ranged from fashion to photography to travel to tech – with no shortage of bloggers vying for the titles.
Ms. Weafer’s brother, Martin Nally told Topic that his sister became fluent in Irish after leaving Ireland to live in the United States. “When she was in the US, like every emigrant, she developed a deeper interest in all things Irish and began teaching Irish dancing. She also became fluent in Irish, Japanese and Spanish. So she’s very much a linguist, unlike the rest of the family.”
Ms. Weafer has been blogging for three years and had previously ranked at number two on Twitter for her Irish tweets. She is daughter of the former long-time editor of the Westmeath Examiner, Nicholas Nally. Her older brother, Bernard, collected the award on her behalf.
